Thoughts on Fasting
Qasida 1, Bayt No.262
My fasting is the abstinence from all others
My light is a fire and the demons are chained
Reference is made in this verse to the fasting of the upper elite. This fasting goes beyond the simple abstinence from taking any food or drink. The fasting of the upper elite is the forsaking of all but Allah. Their hearts and souls are therefore engaged in the act of fasting.
The Arabic term used is "Sawwamun" which means that “fasting” is to them a natural state and has become their value during or beyond Ramadan. At all times, they are in a state of communion with the Creator, and see nothing else. This communion with the Creator is not broken by the breaking of the fast, or even by the ending of the month of Ramadan. To them, it is a permanent state rendered more intense by virtue of the holiness of the month itself, month where the Koran was sent, month of the Night of Power, month where the gates of Heaven are open and the gates of hell closed and the demons are chained.
My light is a fire and the demons are chained: Fasting of the upper elite. During the month of Ramadan the demons are chained with chains of fire and they have been deprived of the light of the Khalifa (The Sheikh), which comes from the light of the Prophet PBUH.
